ink and copy book.) When evening came we were puzzled as how to get the house fastened against robbers.
Ida knocked up a plank in the floor so Hattie could fasten the windows after we got out and then to crawl down the hole. The other little ones had all gone. She had made no little racket pounding with the ax. When I was sweeping the floor and Hattie and Ida were busy fixing to go, Mr. Barkley steps around the corner of the house. He said he heard such a racket down there he thought someone was breaking in. Rutlege, his little boy, had told him we were gone. I was standing by the window so he could not see the board knocked up. I told him to not think anything about any racket he would hear down there for we were always making a big noise. I did not think it was his business to know of our plan of fastening the schoolhouse. So I did not tell him. I told him why we had to come in at the window. He seemed satisfied with what I told him and took his departure and left us to carry out our plan in peace. It did look too funny to see Hattie crawling down that hole. I finished my second correspondence lesson Saturday evening. Did not go to church, wrote to Villa Millet, coras [[mother?]]
