Passed Schiedam, Delft, The Hague etc. Arrived late in Haarlem. Lot of carriages awaiting us. Picturesque drive around town. Fascinating houses & streets. Color. People different from us. Canals. Pension Minerva. Saw Miss Haight. Drove to Cafe Brinkman. Mr. Chase received us. Swell dinner of Fourth of July. Decorations "Frans Hals" Speeches, fire crackers, music, wine, glorious time. beautiful people. Got home about 3. a.m. Sunrise. Tired.

July 5

Rose 1030. Breakfast—simple & good. Strolled out w. Misses Taylor & Howland Streets are quaint but beautiful as well. Bricks etc -color. Fun with the Dutch signs. Beautiful gray Groote Kerks on the Groote Markt. Canals. Brass head-dresses. Costumes. Went to the other

pension the Leder on the Zijlstraat. Visited; came back to Staathuis & saw the Hals (not very much else.) Mr. Chase had said they were going to grow on us more later, but as it was they were overpowering. Wandered around through back streets. Saw the people, looked through alleyways to the garden always behind the house. Saw brass & pottery. Red-faces, costumes. Went to a café & had a glass of beer for 5 [[symbol for cent]]. Talked with the man, not too much German, but we got on. Bought candy "twee voor een cent." Tolerable. Home, tired. Very Good Supper. Walked to the Leder with Miss Haight Talked. Am not afraid to ask directions ^[[in Dutch]]. Bed.

July 6.
Rose etc. ^[[Letter from home.]] 10 a.m. at Stadhuis. Mr. Chase Fine criticisms. & advice. Home. Dinner — Went to station and met Mr. Chase. Took cross country tram to Zandvoort, a fishing village. Bright green fields, little canals, fine bits of color in the
