that at Haarlem. But we are sawing wood.

July 27.

Went after mug and got pipe cleaner. Then Schamberg and I went to N.G. and did English rooms. The grand things! The Reynolds' Gentlemen and Countesses. The Shrimp Girl, Calais Gate etc. Lunch and looking around-books, ticket etc. The back and finished Englishmen. The small things in the finished Constables fading away, and the bigness looming as in the great sketches. Crome [[?]]. Turner, the grand. Out via Reynolds and Hogarth and Gainsborough. Went up Regent St. to Liberty's but did not get any prints. Slight, pleasant rain. Went to studio and invoiced goods. Home on the run choking down crackers (8.30) Brushed up and went to Hallowes' with boys. Pleasant evening. The nice English. Legard. Home and reckoned till late and looks right.

No letter writing-as usual. Got order to see Mr. Townsley and squared accounts with him; at some length. Had to make copies of invoice. Finally got off, and looked up laundry (which never came) and got stuff at studio etc. Afternoon spent in packing. Felt all was O.K. Returned Mrs. Medlock's violin; supper; kind good-byes; Cab ride to Liverpool St. Confusion at crowded train. Made trip in guard-room - writing. Boarded the "Dresden" at Harwich. In doubt about meeting "Potsdam", glad of what officer told me. Lucky to get bunk.

July 29.

Pretty good night-if a short one. Got up about 3.45 and came above. Beautiful morning. Talked with Rev. Mr. Chapman of York about evolution etc. Light brightening, reached dock; found Potsdam would land at Rotterdam which we reached after charming ride up the Maas.
