Uberaba. Of the 3600$ I had with me I'll only keep enough to get to Uberaba (where I change trains anyway and where there is a Banco do Brasil) and then owe Jose a conto and a half. The whole will have cost me a little more than 5 contos, some $550. My trunkful of dried grasses is the  most costly baggage I've ever had. But I'm glad I went, though sorry I missed so many things.
I'm going out to walk in the sun and warm up before almoça at 10. I'll be glad to get back to clean clothes and

a sweater this evening. I brought no wrap, except the rubber poncho and left that, unfortunately. 
Monday April 21. Uberlandia- waiting for train time 9 am. We didn't get off from Sta Rita do Paranahyba till nearly 1. Jose meant to get the price of his ring by reaching here Sunday but characteristicly the last minute. He was working on his car the last hour of two before leaving. There was no time to search the few bits of matta in Minas as I had hoped to do. Jose had the nerve to remark the night before that I'd [[underline]] miss [[/underline]] him. I'll miss him as I miss
