the picturesque little town as background was quite perfect -
Cushing and I got the costumes trunks off to Paris and we started off together - he to Paris and I to Bar le Duc - at ___ we changed cars and I got a train "Pensionnaires" and got to my destination at 2.30 - slept on a long chair - in the Y. hut. with the room full of sleeping soldiers.
Monday Oct 7.
Had interview with Mr Phelps. Regional Entertainment Sec. - met Miss King and Ranke - and had a talk with Swinburn - who I fear is too independent to make good in my business up here - Saw Rose Saltonstall and her three soldiers "Miss Rose" as she is called.-
Went with her and her troupe and Phelps to an aviation camp where - we lunched [she and I] with the officers - We left her and her troupe there - and went on up the Front. and later on in the afternoon picked up the Mays party and brought them back to Bar le duc. .Spent the night in a real bed - at Hotel Moderne
Tuesday Oct 8
Not much doing to-day - but all sorts of extraordinary rumors floating about. and hard fighting up Verdun way - Yesterday on our way up towards the lines - went through Clermont. with its ruined chapel on the little hill top - which Corrina, Mildred and I visited two years ago.
The English [with some Americans] will take Cambrai tomorrow it is predicted -
Our men are having a hard fight clearing the Enemy out of the Argonne Woods. - but we are doing it - despite the cost.
