day. We spent the night comfortably [when home I spent a comfortable night in this little town] - at Crays rooms.
With Cunningham, we started out in the faithful but shaky old Lizzie Ford - Stopped one enough in Verdun - to let Billie see the city as we went through its principal streets and up to the Cathedral - then on our way. and branched off to Etain - and right over the famous barren, terrible hill of a million deaths - It is a tragic country to go through - its desolation is impressive but dispiriting as well -
At Etain - Lizzie broke a spring and was tied up - by Cunningham and resourceful Billie - We came lamely into a little town where Lizzie swerved away in a tire and her spring untied itself again - A Major and some under officers came out and made fun of our poor steed - Lizzies are fair game for laughing at - but we minded their guff very little when they suggested we go to their mess for a belated lunch which we did - and where we fared extremely well as usual -
Exquisite country - throughout this region - and we had a fine afternoon with bursts of sun light -
Arrived at Luxemburg. at dusk - and got in touch with officers of the 5th [[image - diamond]]. and after supper had a long and good talk with its senior chaplain.
Cray and I had a long talk later. over tall Steins of beer. and so very merrie (and sober) to bed.
