very tired - and I am writing these lines about as tired out as I've been anytime since I've been over here. - But its been a memorable day
- INTO GERMANY WITH THE 86th. !
Saturday 7th
Started away from Luxemburg - after a rather unsatisfactory "conference" (how sick I am with that word) with Mr West.
Lizzie was shy gazoline - and we could get none in Luxemborg - we got as far as [[Longou?]] - and there ran out. getting some German gaz. from the great German base of Supplies - upon Army permission
While waiting about - lunched at army mess - and looked over the vast plant - our men are eating up some of the quantities of pickles and saurkraut which were found in good condition
Lizzie didn't like the new liquid very well and she sputtered terribly - uttered unearthly noises. and belched forth clouds of suffocating blue smoke. but she [[underlined]] moved [[/underlined]] - altho not at her former gaits. perhaps
Things went badly for us. Lizzie was clearly nearing her finish - or at least a thorough overhauling - and rest - and coming over Dead Mans Hill she couldn't make it and we got towed into Verdun by a friendly Army man in a Sister Ford.
At Verdun we got a truck to tow us to Soully - and from there a Dodge car towed us (by Army Country), to Ippecourt.
Ippecourt a sea of mud through which we floundered for supper and lodging. - we slept in the 2nd tent - and part of the night a large rat gave considerable entertainment to some of the men -
Sunday 8th
Bill was up bright and early. digging ditches - trying to make Ippecourt possible

Transcription Notes:
Important to note that the insignia he drew on the previous page was for the 89th so he may have actually been traveling with the 89th. I searched lists of placenames in Meuse (where Ippecourt and Bar le duc are), Moselle (where Metz is), and Meurthe-et-Moselle (where Nancy is) (all are between Bar le duc and Luxembourg) looking for a likely match for the second L- placename in the third paragraph and I think it could be Longeaux (in Meuse), spelled phonetically.
