[[insertion from left page]] 26th day no crew 5 miles Dier Mues & Diamont after we had left wind came from North [[/insertion from left page]]
Tuesday Dec. 18 One month of boat gone and we are still at Deim Moes. Dowie & the gov. decide to go to Assuit & try to get word to Joe - train goes at 11.45 but is 1 1/2 hours late. We arrived at [[strikethrough]] Luxor [[/strikethrough]] [[insertion]] Assuit [[/insertion]] with a sailor whom the Capt. sent to get more crew - I doubt his finding them. We got about 40 letters and several of Lois's clippings - no word from Joe later than Dec 5.
Dowie & I came back arriving at Deir Moes at about 9 P.M. - no Youseff & Capt. who agreed to meet us there - we got a boy & a gaffir who led us a weary journey over hedges & ditches & durra fields & at last we arrived where we had left the boat and it was gone - "what shall we do" We go to the little mud village & try in vain to wake up the head man - at last a gaffir wakes the police Station - furnishes us with a light and 3 - blankets & sleeping outside the door we go to bed. I awake at 3 am. Dowie at 5.
5.30 The gaffir gets his daughter to put our large bag of bread &c on her head - he takes the small package of canvass & we trot to the station an hour too early -
3 eggs some oranges & native bread has been our food.
