the Nelson monument, which is an enormous Greek column, with his statue on the top. We thought it a good kind of monument. It has a fine appearance. Trafalgar is a large paved square, with two fountains in it and surrounded by fine large buildings. On the northern side is the National Gallery and Royal Academy. To the east, Morley's great hotel. to the southeast is the Duke of Northumberlands house, a dark old building, and on the other face fine stores and a statue. We returned to our lodings through Green Park, passing Carleton House, which is for sale. It is a very large building of Greek design. Green Park is a long narrow enclosure, with many very fine trees in it, and there is also a basin of water. Picadilly runs along the north side, and a broad avenue on the other, separates it from St. James's park. At the head of this avenue in Buckingham Palace facing both parks. We returned about tea time. Mr. Fisher called to see us

and promised to spend the next evening with us. 
Oct: 9th. Father had a headache. mother sewed. I wrote journal. Lilly sewed etc. Mr. Fisher came and stayed to tea, and we had a very pleasant evening. 10th. Father got a ticket which would admit us to the Bridgewater collection, now owned by Lord [Ellimere?]. After dinner we all got furbished up, and set off down Green Park having Lord [Ellemere's?], and two other prominent mansions, in view all the way as they are situated at the end of Green Park. On reaching Lord Ellemere's, which is a beautiful palladian building, we entered a fine large hall, which was yet unfinished, and then going up a large stairway, and along a corridore we were in the gallery which is filled with fine old pictures. There are three very good ones by Raphael of the Holy Family, and quantities of very fine ones by all the old painters. A full length by Sir Joshua Reynolds
