Last Friday experiments were made [[strikethrough]] to [[/strikethrough]] as follows: -
A disk of type-metal was covered with a thin film of wax, and after a ^ [[spiral]] line [[strikethrough]] had [[/strikethrough]] with the vibrations of the voice impressed upon it, was cut, the disk was placed in a solution of sulphate of copper and a thin deposit of copper obtained upon the line. It was then transferred to the iron solution (Ferric Ammonia Sulfate in water) and a deposit of iron formed upon the copper.
The deposit obtained was quite thin and irregular. The disk was placed in the lathe, and attempts made to reproduce the sounds from the recorded vibrations, in the following manner: -

[drawing]] To the left a horizontal shaft (to be held in lathe for rotation) to which the Type metal disk is attached. The small magnet’s conical point interfaces with the metal disk. The magnet connects to the earpiece at a right angle, the point of the lever at the knee of the right angle. [[/drawing]]

On account of the noise made by the gearing of the lathe, (used to give the slow motion to the slide-rest, which carried the reproducing arrangement) no sounds were heard when the magnet was passed over the iron plated line, but I believe that the sounds of the voice would have been audible if outside noises could have been eliminated, though I doubt if it would have been possible to have understood the words.
