Sunday May 14-1882.

The following experiments in reproducing the sounds recorded upon the phonogram described upon the preceeding page, (5) were made Friday and Saturday.

The articulation obtained with this reproducing apparatus was the most distinct of [[strikethrough]] of [[/strikethrough]] any obtained up to this time; but there was a disagreeable hollow [[strikethrough]] soun [[/strikethrough]] quality attached to it.

In order to ascertain if this hollow sound was a part of the phonogram, or whether it was a peculiarity of the receiver wand used, (the receiver had not been used before for this purpose) I substituted the one ^[[used]] in the similar experiments made several weeks ago. The only difference of any apparent account between the two receivers was ^[[in]] the second one the diaphragm was pressed between two rings of rubber tubing, thus: [[image - arrow pointing to diagram of diaphragm pressed between two circles]] instead of resting upon the metal.

The articulation obtained with this receiver was entirely free from the hollow quality noticed above.

Mica diaphragms of different thicknesses were then tried with the result that the best articulation was obtained with one 0.002 in. in thickness. This gave the best results obtained.
