immediately change its position and move to a place where the friction at the two contacts became equal.
This action seems to me to be capable of being [[strikethrough]] used in [[/strikethrough]] utilized in a great many ways. The following applications have occurred to me already: -
1st -- As a means of regulating motors or machinery of any kind when it is important to have a uniform motion at a given speed.
[[image - diagram of apparatus with points labeled with capital letters: A, B, C, D, E, F, G]]
Let roller A. be turned by clockwork at a uniform speed, and roller B. connected to the machinery to be regulated; now as long as B. turns with the same velocity as A. bar C. will take up a position where it will neither press the electrical contacts D - E nor F - C; but if B turns a very little slower than A the friction between
A - C will be greater than that between B & C, and C will press [[insertion]] ^ G [[/insertion]] in contact with F; thus closing an electric circuit which operates to let on more power to the machinery with which B is connected.
In the case of a steam engine the closing of F - G would operate to let on more steam
