    Wednesday June 27-1883
rained on several times the insulation had fallen to 40000 ohms, and this afternoon after it had rained ^[[hard]] for about twenty hours the insulation had fallen to about 7000 ohms.
   Owing to the rough handling the wire received while being put up on the poles, the joint in the outer strip of upper became opened badly in several places, and I expected that moisture would leak in.
   The first test made was to connect six bichromate battery cells together with an interrupter in circuit with the insulated disturbing wire while the double conductor was arranged in metallic circuit and a telephone connected with it.
   This test gave perfect silence in the  telephone. The battery and interrupter were then placed in circuit with the double conductor and the telephone with the insulated wire but this test gave silence in the telephone also.
  To prove that the arrangements were all right a portion of the outer conductor of the double conductor was short circuited which had the effect of bringing out the sound in the telephone
