          Thursday Oct. 2 - 1883.
     Some time ago it occurred to me to try a jet of some hot substance in connection with a thermo-electric battery, and about a week ago I had the following instrument constructed for that purpose.

     A is a German silver wire, and B, an iron wire soldered together at C with silver. D-E, are brass supporting pieces screwed to the wooden block F.
     At the point where A & B were joined the metal was filed away as shown so as to have thin at the joint.
     Upon connecting A & B in circuit with a telephone (resistance of coil 6/10 ohm) and rheotome, and heating the junction C, a current was produced that made a sound in the telephone loud enough to be heard with the instrument several inches from the ear.
     The rheotome was then taken out of the circuit, and a jet of cold water
