Worcester Sep 23 weather a little warmer begin to paint a head of Valsucamph at his place Got a check in the mail from Ruth von Schalley for a subscription for my Copley Tell Val I had a note from Ruth and he is astonished. Val is in an awful stew for money says "I must have some, why I owe for Board. I must do something. Maud asked me and she never doo that but she says everything is so dear everything cost so much now, so I'm going to take my boat model up to Mr. Atwood; he said he would buy it if he could, anyway he said to bring it up and he would send it back this afternoon or send a check." So I wait while Val brings up the model telling him I'll prepare the millboard on which I'd painted Kimball and be ready to paint him over it when he returned. Have only a few minutes start on Val when 12 oclock sounds so I go home to Carol as I promised to bring her some bread & things for her and the kids. Approach the house through the berry bushes and whistle. Hear the little ones running to the screen door to greet me, dear little ones. Over town after lunch then back to Val's and continue the portrait of him. He is highly pleased with it and tells me he thinks it better than the one I did of him ten years ago and the best one I've done in Worcester this summer. Val talks much as I paint him. Says Anderson is talking [[/end page]]
