happy every body smiling.  A great day.  Get into elevator in 20 story building in 40th St.  At 18th floor several men [[strikethrough]] stand [[/strikethrough]] prepare to enter lift.  Try to prevail upon one to come also.  As they step in leaving the one alone, one says "I'll report you as a Pro-German.  The idea of doing business now.  The men were all happy all chattering  One says "Poor Mrs.-- [[strikethrough]] she [[/strikethrough]] her husband is over there in France she was so happy she put her head in my shoulder & cried.  Down on the street the noise increased, the crowd increased.  Making my way to 42nd St front of Library.  I stood awhile to watch the incipient parades push through the crowds.  Some students passed one carrying high a bass drum another beating it another rattling tins as cymbals.  Pie plates were in general use as cymbals.  Tin cans with stones in them were dragged & bounced along on the ends of cords.  Effigies of the Kaiser crudely and hurriedly fashioned began to appear.  Groups of girls trooped along smiling and blowing long horns  groups of students single-filed with hands on shoulders with occassional sailors & soldiers joining the lines.
