    Monday 30 Dec  stop at Babcocks  meet Bowdoin there and Mrs Machefert  Coritssoz's assistant on the "Tribune".  Bowdoin asks if I'd have time to do some book reviews for Harpers.  Babcock comes in for a minute says he's going home to the country over New Years stay till week fr Monday.  Stop at [[Bourgions?] and B asks me into his inner private galley to see a bronze by Renoir!  nude woman very heavy but very human full of "nature."  [[Bourgoine?]] says Anisfelds show at Brooklyn was too big that Anisfeld himself planned the thing and had the resource  I suppose from this that Brenton was merely hired and paid for the catalog and now I see how it all came on.  Brinton's interest was of course for himself.  In a very short time a

This is [[underlined]] remarkable! [[/underlined]] Is Copley a plagiarist.
This portrait has the same pose, lighting & arrangement of hair & black satin gown low neck that [[strikethrough]] ch [[/strikethrough]] Copleys Mrs. Hay has.  Face is of course different but [[strikethrough]] arr [[/strikethrough]] the bust and hair extremely like.
Copleys canvass is not [[T this square &?]] it is obvious Rs was painted first  though must be certain of this.  This is not so like as the Marlboro is like Mrs Rogers but is near enough to remark.
  23 Rs. E. Spenser Duke of Marlboro is a beautiful 3/4 standing worthy of Van Dyke fine eng by S W Reynolds

   My God!  Copley is no plagiarist but this is certain neither was Reynolds,  but swindling dealers have had pictures forged as by Reynolds which are almost straight copies of Copley with a
