S had not much good to say of Rs work some of which we had at the Waldorf. Friday Saturday Sunday Monday take noon train to Hartford depart to Kress - Find door locked + janitor says J K is at work up town. has a piano teacher using place part time is behind in rent and thinks he's going to give the place [[at?]] up. Call up Segman from Greenburgs S says he's busy at benk and can't get down. Says J is at D.W.O. Meet Billo Becher + G at Gs G. says Vagaur is "building" a studio on the corner. Stop to see J.K. not in. Down to Dr. Bondhis + they want me to stay to dinner + the night there. Annie B looks well. at 8 trolly to Farmington to see Brandeyes as I approach the house in the dark street on the hill three flashes of lightening + three peals of thunder come suddenly out of the dark. Just as I step onto Bs porch the rain pelts down. House dark. I rap. Light springs upstairs Mrs. B in robe comes to door offers me umbrella says they're all abed. I'm about ready to go still standing at the door on the porch when Mrs. B rather reluctantly, it seems, assures me she hears B stirring upstairs. Surely Enough The great man appears at the head of the stairs and descends - I go in. He puts out his hand. I ask him if he's well. He sits down and tells me to draw up a chair after I tell him that nature set off [[end page]] [[start page]] 119 a salute of three guns as I approached. B laughs - tells me he had a bad accident - fell down cellar stairs and struck his head on the cement floor - was six days unconscious. Says he had a slight shock some time ago and he drags one foot as a consequence -B is interested to hear about the new paper. Mrs. B remains upstairs B says Foster (Charlie) is funny. Says to him "What a pity men like you have to die." B smiles as he tells me this, and I say something about Foster's delicacy in saying such a thing. B says he has painted a head of Furyk and F one of him that F is married. B says he hasn't seen Douglas's show. B says he sold 6 sandscapes to a woman who took the other two to Montross. When she asked B what he'd sell them for he told her $25 but Montross said $200 and sold one already. B says Miss Beaux has been [[crossed out]]verry[[/crossed out]] very kind to him + says she thinks she paints better after having some "lessons" from him. I tell him her portrait of him nevertheless looked pretty thin + week at the Ex of the Woman's Painters.
