picture of loneliness. Bright sky, yet the sun is not stinging  
Felt good to sit in the sun. It is [[red underline]] neither too cold nor too hot, [[/red underline]] altho I wore warm clothes. [[red underline]] Easy going cheerful life, [[/red underline]] no hurry, no noise, no hustle or bustle yet everything well kept, not a leaf on the ground nothing to hurt the eye and all around lovely nature. Took an old ramshackle but clean vehicle and drove to [[red underline]] Cascadilhas [[/red underline]] my gray haired driver cared well for his two old looking little horses. Followed the stream thru a picturesque landscape with [[strikethrough]] hills [[/strikethrough]] green clad hills and trees both sides. Paid him [[red underline]] 20 milreis (about 5 Dollars [[/red underline]] for this two hours ride). Many orchids in the trees. Also some factories, cotton, and

clothes, [[red underline]] but gracefully situated in the landscape [[/red underline]] and not marring it as so many of our factories do. [[red underline]] Everything picturesque. [[/red underline]] Men on horseback here have a special silver stirrup different from anything I have seen thus far. They are made of perfectly circular disk with an opening for the foot. and suspended by an upper prolongment thru which passes a strap of leather.

Horses are small as in Porto Rico. [[red underline]] All people seem very polite [[/red underline]] here. A riot of flowers A leisurely life.- for old men and ladies. I notice many [[red underline]] schools all seem clean and well kept. Many [[/red underline]] mules. 
The fine carriages are drawn by mules. Saw some [[red underline]] Ford [[/red underline]] automobiles conducted by [[strikethrough]] chauffeurs [[/strikethrough]] prosperous looking
