April 30. Visit to [[underline]] Papandejan [[/underline]] Left 8.AM. fine drive. Paddy terraces. At [[strikethrough]] Tjis [[/strikethrough]] [[underline]] Tjosoeropian [[/underline]] there is a good Hotel villa Pauline. ^[[4500 ft altitude]] seemed rather dead and unfrequented. From here visitors take horses or palanquins to the volcano. But I prefered to drive on to [[underline]] Tjisonipet [[/underline]] climbing [[strikethrough]] over [[/strikethrough]] mountain roads, succession of hairpin corners. Tea Estate Big Tree ferns - Clouds below. then extended views in landscape below. [[underline]] Delightful climate. [[/underline]]

are 5 ƒ^[[lorins]] per hour and maximum for large car is 50-60 ƒ a day I pay for my room and board only ƒ 12. Manager is Mr. John Wennips; speaks excellent English is a quiet tactful man and expresses disgust at the way the [[underline]] White Star Touring Co [[/underline]] has over [[underline]] charged me. [[/underline]]
Left at 7:30 A.M. a very varied drive. Good roads, One stretch running thru enormous plains planted with rice; mountains always in the distance. Then hairpin-road over mountains leaving [[underline]] Preanger [[/underline]] and entering [[underline]] Middle Java or real Java [[/underline]] John says cannot speak Javanese. At about 11 AM arrive in a little place called [[underline]] Koenigan [[/underline]] where I am supposed to stop at Hotel Flora The manager proprietor is half malay and speaks Dutch [[strikethrough]] b [[/strikethrough]] but no English
