118 Men [[underlined]] evidently know their [[/underlined]] waters and before long I came to the conclusion that with the [[underlined]] violent breeze which here sweeps over the mountain one needs very little sail to have all the fun one wants. [[/underlined]] When returning we had the wind abeam and sometimes on the port - bow swinging as close as 4 to 5 points and we made the return trip at the rate of [[underlined]] 7 to 8 Knots. [[/underlined]] Altho' I had taken precaution to have a light rubber coat I arrived thoroughly drenched. This [[underlined]] boat has a clever device for keeping the yard close to the mast even if the throat halyard has to be lowered [[/underlined]] and the sail runs reefed. In [[underlined]] my pram [[/underlined]] I am compelled, in case [[end page]] [[start page]] 119 [[left margin vertical]] Boat was [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] 25' x 8' - double ender with Keel straight [[/left margin vertical]] [[strikethrough]] or [[/strikethrough]] [[/underlined]] I reef my sliding gunther [[/underlined]] sail to hook my halyard at a higher place of the yard; otherwise the yard spreads away from the mast and hangs out and does [[strikethrough]] not [[/strikethrough]] no longer permit [[underlined]] to sail as close to the wind. This boat overcomes [[/underlined]] this by running alongside the mast [[underlined]] a loose nose [[/underlined]] which can be tightened by the running end which runs parallel downward the mast and thus [[underlined]] this nose hugs the throat halyard and [[/underlined]] the yard close to the mast and also acts as a [[underlined]] slow haul [[/underlined]] for the yard and sail. May be the same result could be obtained by means of [[strikethrough]] an [[/strikethrough]] a [[underlined]] galvanised or bronze hook to which a rope is attached which permits to pull it downward thus insuring [[/underlined]] drawing the throat halyard and the yard close to the mast See sketch on next page
Transcription Notes:
'Gunther' sail probably should be a 'Gunter' sail
Just before "my sliding gunther sail" I changed "Grief" to "I reef"--thomasc
I use the word 'underlined' with a 'd' because that it is my understanding from the instructions. It appears to be a waste of time to reopen and edit just to remove the 'd' from the word 'underlined'. If I review a page and the transcriber does not add a 'd' I don't reopen to change.
