[[underline]] Dec 22. [[/underline]] Met Whitaker at 2:30 P.M at our office in presence of George. Told him we are about ready with [[red underline]] Ripper [[/red underline]] but we are rather puzzled with the [[red underline]] patent situation. [[/red underline]] and would like to hear more about present attitude. He tells me that [[red underline]] Mr. Bell, [[/red underline]] president of [[strikethrough]] Cyanamid [[/strikethrough]] Am. [[red underline]] Cyanamid is a lawyer [[/red underline]] and a quaker and is a considerable stockholder but was formerly the lawyer of the Duke interests, and [[red underline]] he and Childs [[/red underline]] represent also the [[red underline]] Duke Interest [[/red underline]] (power) in their company. That the suit of Unite vs. Cyanamid has been delayed by the [[red underline]] tactics of Ellis [[/red underline]] etc trying to gain time. That they have arranged with [[red underline]] Vredenburg [[/red underline]]

and [[red underline]] Chance [[/red underline]] in England to repurchase for cash the stock in Synthetic plastics which the latter had acquired for their American rights. But that this will not occur before the coming year. This arrangement was made to avoid taxation. So that next year the Synthetic Plastics will belong exclusively to Cyanamid and its men. [[red underline]] Whitaker like usually was very frank [[/red underline]] and outspoken and pleasant. - Told him I have a number of documents which may help them in their patent suit and I shall try to collect them soon. Also reminded him that if we had to pay royalties to Ripper & royalties to Cyanamid, besides expenses for patent suits there would be scant inducement for us to continue our contract for license with Synthetic Plastics.

[[/underline]] [[strikethrough]] Wrote [[/strikethrough]] Office closed but met [[red underline]] Hays and George in morning to discuss various pending matters [[/red underline]] Miss Bidwell there till 11 AM. Then afterwards went to U.C for lunch and met [[red underline]] Prof. Hackett [[/red underline]] of Riverdale School. Dick came at 2 P.M to drive me to Yonkers. Celine Roll with us. Christmas tree is all dressed for the event.
[[underline]] Dec 24 [[/underline]] All day at home writing and studying. Wrote [[red underline]] long letter to George Baekeland announcing [[/red underline]] my intention to make [[red underline]] 4 trust funds [[/red underline]] for Nina's children. - one for George and one for my wife.
