[[underline]] Oct 5. [[/underline]] At office all day. Evening went to meeting of N.Y. Section of Am. Chemical Society to listen to [[red underline]] Dow [[/red underline]] and one of his chemists in a lecture of Bromine extraction from sea water. Illustrated by lantern slides and motion picture. Room filled to the limit. Met several old friends took 10 P.M. train for Yonkers - Rain all day
[[underline]] Oct. 6. [[/underline]] Still Rain. Ninette and Bake here last night till the morning [[red underline]] Celine [[/red underline]] drove to Connecticut to [[red underline]] Mrs. Brett [[/red underline]] and brought Celine Roll and Ninette for supper to stay here and tomorrow morning.
[[underline]] Oct 7. Sunday. [[/underline]] Windy & cool [[red underline]] Ninette & Celine Roll [[/red underline]] here till afternoon.
[[underline]] Oct 8. [[/underline]] At office as usually. Evening went to U.C. for supper. - Was alone at my table.

[[underline]] Oct 10. [[/underline]] Went with Gordon Brown to meet D.D. Jackson to plan better Bakelite showcase at Chandler Museum in Columbia. [[red underline]] Dr. Urey [[/red underline]] the discoverer of "Heavy water", showed me his apparatus in his laboratory, for making it. 
[[underline]] Oct 11. [[/underline]] At office as usually. Mild weather, and bright.

[[underline]] Oct 13. [[/underline]] Afternoon went to visit the [[red underline]] Yonkers City Museum in the old Trevor Estate. [[/red underline]] Park and building well kept and exhibits altho' not very numerous are interesting and well displayed. Beautiful view on Hudson from the public park. Afterwards Dick drove me along the newer [[strikethrough]] buildings [[/strikethrough]] residences which have been built during the later years, on and around the [[red underline]] Lilienthal Estate [[/red underline]] the main house or castle now run as a restaurant and roadhouse. "The Abey Inn". Continued our visit northerly along Broadway to the Villard Estate, where new park residences have been installed, with excellent roads. Magnificent view on the Hudson. Here and in Hastings the former woods with [[strikethrough]] al [[/strikethrough]] old trees have become a beautiful setting for very picturesquely situated residences intersected by climbing roads, which run like a labyrinth throughout the former forest.
[[underline]] Oct 14 Sunday [[/underline]] Bright and cool, but calm. Wrote a long letter to [[red underline]] Frederic Swarts [[/red underline]] concerning [[red underline]] Kekulé [[/red underline]] and connections in Ghent.  
Celine at noon brought the disquieting news that little [[red underline]] Freddy has again pains in his leg, [[/red underline]] which seems to threaten the return of his ailment of last year. 
[[underline]] Oct 15. [[/underline]] At office. At noon took [[red underline]] Grenade [[/red underline]] for lunch to [[red underline]] University Club. [[/red underline]] Had a very pleasant 3 hours with him.

He has met [[red underline]] Pirenne [[/red underline]] this summer on his trip to Belgium. Pirenne was very much interested in U.S. of which he has cheerful recollections. Says of all foreign countries
