is working on the [[red underline]] genesis of rocks under high temperatures. [[/red underline]] - Two very able and interesting young men. One in his observations. A very agreeable pleasant day. On returning drove thru roads crossing Zoo, all trees in beautiful autumnal colors.

[[/underline]] Went to [[red underline]] Smithsonian [[/red underline]] Institution [[red underline]] Dr. Abbot, [[/red underline]] director received me very friendly and showed me his new [[red underline]] solar furnace [[/red underline]] in construction. Also the work undertaken on the action of different rays of the spectrum on the growth of plants by [[underline]] 4 [[/underline]] of his assistants whose name I forgot but who prompted me to tell my reminescences of former days.ͯ

Then visited rare books section where Mr. [[black and red underline]] Bachelder [[/black and red underline]] showed me his collection of rare books which are stowed in special room of Congressional library where they are kept safe and where he can study them

[[/underline]] Went to Geological Survey in Old War Department Building there Dr. [[underline]] Steiger [[/underline]] introduced me kindly in different departments some in which I found old friends. Dr. [[underline]] Shader [[/underline]] one of the chemists is director of Chemical Section. Then visited Dr. M.D. [[underline]] Collins [[/underline]] U.S.G.S who specialty is quality of water in Room 3208. Dept of the Interior and showed me some striking examples of how [[red underline]] Florida drinking water had been spoiled on account of some alterations to the soil; [[/red underline]] thus letting in seawater and making drinking water [[red underline]] unsuited: [[/red underline]]
Then [[red underline]] Dr. O.E. Meinzer [[/red underline]] U.S.G.S. whose specialty is study flow of underground water. He [[red underline]] does not want to commit himself publically [[/red underline]] about the [[strikethrough]] threaden [[/strikethrough]] threatened disturbances which are likely to occur in [[red underline]] Southerly Florida if that stupid and unnecessary Florida Canal is built across the peninsula [[/red underline]] [[vertical note in left margin]] Phyllosatchys Bambusoides Giant bamboo 2" to 5" thick - 20 - 70 ft high [[/vertical note in left margin]]
