divulge all the details of manufacture and sales. [[strikethrough]] But on fe [[/strikethrough]]
[[underline]] Dec. 20 [[/underline]] Redman & Dr. [[red underline]] Schmidt [[/red underline]] brought the latters note-books with him. [[strikethrough]] It is very [[/strikethrough]] giving the history of his work on [[red underline]] Luxene [[/red underline]].
[[vertical note in left margin in red]] Luxene [[/vertical note in left margin]]
These notes confirm what Redman told me
1/ That [[red underline]] Schmidt [[/red underline]] obtained his first results, [[red underline]] years before Pollak [[/red underline]] filling in Vienna
2/ that he used [[strikethrough]] 1 M [[/strikethrough]] 1 Mole Phenol for 3 moles of formaldehyde later was able to reduce the amount of formaldehyde
3/ Used [[red underline]] lactic acid as well as vacuum distillation [[/red underline]] etc.
That patent was finally filed well before the 2 years of commercial use had elapsed. - [[vertical note in left margin in red]] Catalin [[/vertical note in left margin]] The main thing now is to find Schmidt's early samples which I fear have been lost while moving from [[strikethrough]] Bound [[/strikethrough]] Bloomfield to Bound Brook. We all feel easier and it becomes the [[strikethrough]] general [[/strikethrough]] opinion of Rossi, George & myself as well as Redman that it may be simpler to accept the Catalin license, provided we can drop it if we want to and not recognise the validity of the Catalin patents.
[[underline]] Dec. 21 [[/underline]] Very busy all day studying patent records. Celine is away for supper at George and Nina. [[red underline]] Little Peter B. Roll here for supper [[/red underline]] with me and staying overnight. Cold and snow and wet. Celine took Nina and her children to the theatre in New York, while Peter joined me here. - [[red underline]] Fine intelligent boy. [[/red underline]]

[[underline]] Sunday. ^[[Dec. 22]] [[/underline]] Further study of [[red underline]] Catalin [[/red underline]] case and prior art. Bright cold and white. River is carrying big broken ice flats. [[red underline]] Wrote text for letter to all employes of Bakelite announcing a 5% bonus on their salaries for 1935 [[/red underline]] Peter left to join his mother at Scarsdale before luncheon.
[[vertical note in left margin in red]] George B photo as a boy child [[/vertical note in left margin]]
Found a portrait of [[red underline]] George B [[/red underline]] made when [[red underline]] he was about 2 years [[/red underline]] old and wore little [[strikethrough]] ski [[/strikethrough]] skirts before he got trousers. Looking at it and thinking this plump-faced looking little child is [[red underline]] now developed into a [[strikethrough]] man who [[/strikethrough]] full grown intelligent man of thought and action [[/red underline]] and whose advice I value and is of utmost importance in our joint responsibilities. - This is the story of life! - How different would it have been if George had developed say degenerated in the way so many sons of [[strikethrough]] families [[/strikethrough]] good families do when they take the wrong road or grow up among bad examples, [[strikethrough]] like [[/strikethrough]] or bad company.
[[underline]] Dec. 23 [[/underline]] I find that [[red underline]] application of Smidt [[/red underline]] was filed (for dental plate) on [[red underline]] March 16-1928, [[/red underline]] was allowed May 3-1934, and final fee was payable Nov. 1934. But because it was considered the claims were not broad enough to protect and in view of the allowance of the Catalin (Pollak) patents it was decided to let the case be forfeited to be taken up
