Invited [[red underline]] Jackson, Hixson [[/red underline]] and the latter's daughter to take simple luncheon together at Adelphi, instead of joining the regular luncheon presented to the members of the Society [[red underline]]
[[left margin in red]] Hixson [[/left margin]]
Hixson studied with Landon, [[/red underline]] the now candidate of the Republicans for the Presidency of the U.S. This is an intimate friend of [[red underline]] Hixson [[/red underline]] and the latter enthusiastically describes his excellent qualifications. A quiet, pleasant man, who seriously and cheerfully attends to his duties and cannot be swayed by the usual tricks of politicians. They both were born in Kansas. - [[red underline]] This gives me better hope that Roosevelt may be defeated [[/red underline]] next November.
[[left margin, underlined]] Calder [[/left margin, underlined]]
Short nap and then ready for tonights closing dinner in honor of my friend [[red underline]] Calder [[/red underline]] who in a week is retiring as president of the Soc. Chem. Industry to be succeeded by Lord [[red underline]] Levershulm [[/red underline]] The dinner was in the largest room of the Adelphi hotel. The speakers indicated on the card were as follows:
8:45 P.M. Toast to the King [[short red line]]
9:00 Lord Leverhulme [[short red line]]
9:10 The Lord Mayor [[short red line]]

The room was filled to the limit. Again [[red underline]] "wearing" orders [[/red underline]] & decorations. I was seated with [[red underline]] Mrs. Calder to my left, [[/red underline]] she sitting to the right of the [[red underline]] Lord Mayor [[/red underline]] who had Calder and Leverhulme at his left. Calder presiding, right to me Mrs. Armstrong & right to her, Professor Roberts
[[left margin in red]] Speeches in my honor [[/left margin in red]]
[[red underline]] Lord Leverhulme [[/red underline]] in his short speech made a most [[ red underline]] eulogious [[/red underline]] reference [[red underline]] to my presence [[/red underline]] and my work and announced to the meeting the news just published ^[[by the papers]] of having been made an Honorary Member of the [[red underline]] Royal Society of Edinburgh which was loudly acclaimed and every one in the room [[strikethrough]] ro [[/strikethrough]] got up and a toast to me.[[/red underline]]
All this occurred [[red underline]]so unexpectedly [[/red underline]] that in the meantime I had forgotten entirely the subject of my speech which I had so well prepared.
Then the [[red underline]] Lord Mayor [[/red underline]] got up and in his cheerful charmingly said [[strikethrough]] spea [[/strikethrough]] speech he [[red underline]] also put emphasis [[/red underline]] on my presence and my work and the [[red underline]] Edinburgh [[/red underline]] honors. I thought that after two of the speakers had mentioned me so abundantly, this would end
