1850 July 1. Burlington Iowa

R.F. Bauer MD

   Dear Sir

The Bearer hereof Francis Berchem [[Luceverde?]] is a poor Prussian, who has taken a view of Burlington, and is now on his way to St. Louis to get it Lithographed. - He has a list of subscribers amounting to about 75, which will enable him to feel secure of sale, should he succeed in his enterprize. Will you be so good as to examine his sketch, and if you think it worthy of patronage, please give him a word of encouragement? The price of a copy is only $1.00 - But I do not make a demand on yr. Purse. - All I ask for this poor fellow, is a kind word and such directions as will enable him to select the best artist in yr. City.
Please excuse the trouble I give you & accept assurances &c of yr.
