May 16, 1932 (cont.) In Tulare lake basin our attention was attracted by a flight of [[underlined]] Tricolored Blackbirds [[/underlined]] across the highway. Getting up on a levee we could see the birds alighting near a man irrigating some land about half a mile away. We [[cruised?]] around & finally wormed our way into the colony in a drain ditch thickly grown with Juncus & tules. Colony occupied .6 of a mile according to spedometer reading & varies from 40-75 feet in width. Nest contained newly hatched to nearly fledged young & in addition many young were about in small flocks. About 2000 nesting pairs.
This is about [[strikethrough]] miles south of Gyberson ranch headquarters.
Then stopped at Buttonwillow to see Tule Elk which is smaller & lighter colored than others. Thence to L.A. for night.
