Great thickets of aspen and choke cherry adorn the hillsides & we are thankful to be in the warm & dry and be able to look out on a most fair country. June 1, 1932
Left camp at 700 AM and traveled thru terrible mud & gumbo to Mountain City & then to Elko arriving at 400 P.M.
This is a beautiful country at an elevation of between 7000 & 8000 feet with the Jack Creek mountains rising to nearly 12000 feet. They are covered with deep snow and even at our elevation there are many huge banks. Great thickets of Aspen and choke cherry cling on the wet slopes & the creek bottoms are filled with willow, rose, etc. It is a great bird country & promises much in the plant line but it is much too early for that yet.
We slide off the road once & had to build a causeway of rocks to get back. Also saw a badger sunning himself near a huge rock. Later in the day we spied another coyote which Fairchilds missed when standing but sent rolling with a beautiful running shot just as it topped a little ridge. It was a barren female.
[[underlined]] Birds [[/underlined]] Birds were plentiful in the little thickets & I took an hours walk about the Cabin at Columbia & another little hike up an aspen studded canyon where we stopped for lunch.
