Sept 11, 1934.
At office all day-stopping in A.M to get a look at Clara who has improved remarkably. Greased & serviced car. Wrote a lot of letters. Talked with Ray James on telephone. Early shooting in Skagit flats - wants 2 or three men. Promised to help on my return from California. Worcester telephoned from Klamath Falls that duck sickness was becoming acute and had pens full. Wired Washington for 150.00 to build new pens. 
Mrs. Merrill - W.S. Raher in also numerous others & saw Clara in evening & went to bed at 10:00 after getting stuff ready.
Sept 12, 1934.
Left home 800 AM. Collected John Carter 
Went to office for mail & then to hospital to bid good bye to Clara. She was feeling fine. Rained like the devil all way to Eugene where we ate lunch. In P.M. began to clear as we went south.
Beginning at Oakland we found a [[underline]][[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] Sooty Grouse [[/underline]], [[underline]] Lewis Woodpecker [[/underline]] (Myrtle Creek) [[underline]] Screech Owl [[/underline]], (foot of Sexton Mt on south & a [[underline]] Valley Quail [[/underline]] at Central Point dead in road. Quail, Grouse & owl killed by car. Could find no injury on woodpecker. This is largest number of good skinable birds Ive ever found in one day. Saw numerous rabbits, a skunk and several sparrows & a [[underline]] hawk [[/underline]] [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] in addition to above.
Swallows still common. Saw Barn Swallows - from Salem to Ashland - also Violet Green & Tree Swallows & one group of Cliff Swallows near Harrisburg
