June 6, 1936 Left Helena 630AM with Leo and traveled in the rain most of the way to Lake Bowdoin. Its a fine refuge if we could only have some water in it and the reclamation deal may be the answer. Saw 32 male [[underlined]]Canvasback[[/underlined]], a [[underlined]]few geese[[/underlined]] and a good [[underlined]]pelican[[/underlined]] colony. Also lots of breeding [[underlined]]Longspurs[[/underlined]] - largely [[underlined]]Chestnut collored[[/underlined]] but some [[underlined]]McCowns[[/underlined]]. Also both [[underlined]]Marbled Godwits[[/underlined]] and [[underlined]]Long billed Curlew[[/underlined]]. [[underlined]] Willets[[/underlined]] and [[underlined]]Wilsons Phalaropes[[/underlined]] also present. Refuge keeper reports at least one brood of [[underlined]]sage hen[[/underlined]] and a few antelope. Some [[underlined]]Canada geese[[/underlined]]. Saw [[underlined]] Mallards, Pintails, Blue wing teal, Redheads & Gadwalls[[/underlined]]. Hazeltine seems like a good boy but lacks education. In Malta in evening and met County Atty who is a nice fellow but very desirous of having better hunting. June 7,1936 Left Malta 800AM arr Medicine Lake a little after noon. Looked over refuge with Kremins. Lots of [[underlined]]Pintails[[/underlined]] hatched. Saw [[underlined]]Redheads[[/underlined]] nests [[underlined]]Blue wing teal - Pintails - Mallards, Scaup & Gadwall[[/underlined]] present in numbers. Also a lot of [[underlined]]Willett, Wilsons Phalarope[[/underlined]] and great flocks of small sandpipers which seem late to me. This is a fine refuge in the making. June 8,1936 Over rest of refuge seeing control [[mesh?]] and job which has been done to date. Its a fine job but fencing is desperately needed to protect the work already done.
