jump & skip.  They are notched on the outer edge too.  The body is cylindrical yellowish and hairy.  The head has two eyes of the ordinary size and two papillae on each side of the mouth.  Between the eyes & round the mouth is a whitish membrane which is capable of dilation thereby making the head about three times as large as ordinary and can then be retracted till the head looks like an ordinary fly's head.  This I suppose is intended to act like a sucker of great force, but it is certainly very curious to see the insect blowing its head up and then reducing it to the usual proportions.  Pass through most devious windings of the river nearby all day.  Pass by a village & buy two fresh salmon. Chi peet at a bar and let the little live fox which the Capt. bought the other day run about on shore.  It is very playful and makes no attempt to run away.  Chi again at 7 and push on  the river broad & banks low both sides
