form successive ridges [[image - drawing of ridges]] between which are fresh water lakes - long & narrow, or swamps.
The fossils (to July 16) were all found in the westernmost layers.  These are somewhat less crushed than those above them and the latter become lighter colored and more greasy looking toward the top.  The thickness visible above the sea is about 200 ft at the thickest section.  The dioritic intrusions are usualy more or less transverse to the slaty beds.  I could find no bowlders on the surface, but one or two scratched erratics of a sandstone like that of the leaf beds of the peninsula were noticed near the high water mark on the beach (91)
