A very abundant species; peopling as it were the Polar Seas & constituting the chief source of subsistence to the Greenland Whale.  It is indeed most truly wonderful that so small & apparently insignificant an animal can be made to fulfil the most important purposes; from the smallest species of existence to the enormous whale, all derive their food directly

or indirectly from this little creature.  It is in fact to the inhabitants of the Arctic Ocean what the vegetable kingdom is to the inhabitants of the land - the foundation of animal existence
