All hands were now roused. I went upon deck. Venus met me. She peered brightly from behind a bank of [[insertion]] thin [[/insertion]] white clouds crimsoned by the god of day who was now approaching. A 4 o'clock "Up anchor" - & away we [[strikethrough]] went [[/strikethrough]] [[insertion]] started [[/insertion]] as I thought [[strikethrough]] to [[/strikethrough]] [[insertion]] for [[/insertion]] [[strikethrough]] bear [[/strikethrough]] Bear Sound; But I soon found to my sorrow that our course was Home again.
The Thermometer this Morn at the start [[strikethrough]] 32[[degree symbol]] [[/strikethrough]] 32[[degree symbol]] at 7 = 36[[degree symbol]]
A [[insertion]] fresh [[/insertion]] breeze from the N.E. was blowing, therefore we had to but up. By 5 o'clock the wind died nearly away [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] 'Jack-tuck-tuck' is the only record that we need for several hours, of our progress.
Capt. B. & I, feeling [[underlined]] to do something [[/underlined]], took each a gun & dropped ourselves into a Boat & made for the only island in this Bay. Many Nowgens were seen by us hovering around this island. Capt. B. bent on making sure of [[underlined]] some game [[/underlined]] & seeing a gull almost at his feet, drawed off. Bang went the gun, its thunder reverberating among mountains as if "Old Sebastropol" had come to life! Poor gull, its head was [[underlined]] non ext. [[/underlined]]. Its [[strikethrough]] carcas [[/strikethrough]] carcas [[strikethrough]] was [[/strikethough]] on our return made a small but rich feast [[insertion]] in it's raw state [[/insertion]] for our Esquimaux friends [[strikethrough]] who were [[/strikethrough]] on board the Rescue. Several shots were fired, but Nowgens being hard to kill they all escaped. I spent most of my time on this island, hunting for rock specimens - found nothing but the usual kind of the region. The "Rescue" having made some advance during the hour [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] [[insertion]] we were absent [[/insertion]] [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] we gathered up our [[strikethrough]] captured [[/strikethrough]] game - to wit, gull - & returned.
Before it escapes my memory, I wish here to record an interesting fact: One fossil stone, found [[insertion]] yesterday on Hall's Isthmus [[/insertion]] given me by Mr Lamb, on being broken in two, showed an imbedded mineral size & shape of a Duck-shot. I tried to cut it with my "Lupton". It was hard as hardened steel - no effect whatever was made upon this mineral save scraping off the oxid which left bright iron to view. This, to me, valuable little curiosity, slipped my fingers & fell upon the Cabin Floor which has crevices in it. Beneath the floor is stowed the coal. Although it was at once to be supposed that this phenomenon had gone
