[[?]] the end [[intelligencer?]] in a [[strikethrough]][[?]][[/strikethrough]] calm but sympathising way. A thunderbolt had [[?]] [[insertion]] poor [[Kuk-en Zhung?]]'s [[/insertion]] [[strikethrough]] her [[/strikethrough]] heart. That face so beaming in happiness that she was now with her kind, noble-hearted father, was now wet with tears of bitter sorrow!
Never, in my life [[strikethrough]] was there [[/strikethrough]] did I witness so brief, so quick a change from, as it were, [[underlined]] supreme joy [[/underlined]] to that [[strikethrough]]and[[/strikethrough]] of [[unutterable?]] woe! And yet there was calm dignity in all the appearances of [[strikethrough]][[?]][[/strikethrough]] both Kok-en-Zhung & her [[insertion]] Esquimaux [[/insertion]] sympathisers. Not of [[strikethrough]][[?]][[/strikethrough]] the Esquimaux were her only sympathisers. Not one among us of America but deeply commiserated her in her [[strikethrough]][[long?]][[/strikethrough]] bereavement. Among the [[insertion]] Esquimaux [[/insertion]] friends & acquaintances of [[Cudlargo?]], there was great lamentation over his death. As I recollect the New [[?]] record of the death & burial of a great & good man, I cannot [[insertion]] but [[/insertion]] believe the weepings of these iron sons & daughters of the North in accordance with the injuction - "weep with those who weep".
The record to which I refer is:
"And devout men, carried Stephen to his burial, [[underlined]]& made great lamentation over him". [[/underlined]]

The latter Oo-mi-ak contained a mass of humanity etc: - 18 Esquimaux women & children , an "old patriarch", [[Ar-tark-pa-ra?]], who [[strikethrough]]was[[/strikethrough]] is [[strikethrough]][[?]][[/strikethrough]] crippled in both [[nether?]] limbs, but blessed with the heaviest beard & moustaches yet seen among this people, Ten (10) dogs, tents, Rein-deer skins in immense number, Venison, [[insertion]] seal-blubber, [[/insertion]], Ducks, Walrus-heads with [[tucks?]], Hunting instruments, in truth, all this world's goods of some 7 families.

Having made fast to the "Rescue", the humanity & [[insertion]] dog [[/insertion]] position began to make their way aboard. The patriarch, [[Ar-tark-pa-ra?]], who exercised the general Command over this Uo-ni-ak, acting Boat Steerer, was [[strikethrough]] hoisted up [[/strikethrough]] gotten aboard by passing a "[[Slip-er noose?]] [[insertion]] around his body [[/insertion]] beneath his arms & hauling him up whale fashion. The dogs were drawn up same way. The women were left to get up as best they could. The Kay-aks were all taken in on deck, while the Uo-ni-aks were kept in two along side.
[[Ar-tark-pa-ra?]], before leaving his skin craft, made fast the drift timber that he had secured during his passage from
