Landing & making our way to the carcase of Og-big, I commenced whistling, while Sterry began calling, Esquimaux-like. We continued this for about a minute, when we espied the dogs coming down from among the rocks, "pell-mell", making their way to us.

They frisked - they danced - they cried for joy on meeting me! Bar-pe-kark, my pet, tried to talk American, at least, I fancied it. But really he only raised an Esquimaux dog-whine, equivalent to greeting me: "Ar-shu-u tid-leg'? - How do you do?

After congratulations had been mutually exchanged, all around, I signified my desire to do without further dog-worship until I had examined some of the skeleton bones of the Whale's head. On this every dog, including Bar-pe-kark, mounted the body of Whale & went to singing, as only Esquimaux dogs can sing!
Their united voices made such a noise that actually Sterry & I were completely baffled in our respected attempts to make each other heard though speaking very loudly!

I call it singing - [[underlined]] dog singing [[/underlined]] , for so it is. One dog, for instance, commences with outstretched neck & uplifted head - to sing(?). Another & another join in till all are a-going. Some sing base some alto some tenor. Altogether the noise was as if the infernal regions had spared so many singing devils to come up here to make night hideous!

I brought away the drum - bone of the whale's ear wh. I intend to send to Cincinnati with my other "findings".
As we pushed off the dogs (by the by they are all grown fat & sleek) plunged into the water & followed us after. Finding they would not be received aboard & that a raised oar might fall upon their heads they turned for the shore.

This night, I have a glad heart! Capt. Budington had finally offered to let me have Sterry & to exercise his influence in procuring such Esquimaux as I require to accompany me on the great mission for wh. I am here. More, he says I shall have the Rescue's Chronometer - & will do all he can to help me off if I think it best to go this season.

Noble soul has Capt. B. To him I shall ever feel indebted for the kindness & generosity he had ever exercised me in facilitating the preparations for this voyage of mine. May god
