Wednesday Sept 19 1860
The morning fine - fresh breeze from the N.W. Then standing at freezing point.
We have news from Oo-kool-leur by the Georgiana that Capt. Allen ^[[has]] secured two whales since Tes-sa-win started off down here. One on Tuesday Sept. 11th (day after Tessawin arrived here) & one last Saturday Sept 15th. One was very large - other moderate size, both together making near 300 Barrels of oil. This was an extraordinary degree of good luck as only the day before we were reading a dismal report of the success of Capt Allen (said report made by him): that he had caught no whales since we left & seen but two! Capt. A's 2d mate White of New London was the successful Boat Steerer who 1st fastened to these Whales.
All our boats out early , "under special instructions? The "Georgiana" Boats started out at same time - 5 O'Clock Now for competition in Whaling! [[strike-through]] W [[/strike-through]] Competition, [[underlined]] honorable competition [[/underlined]] is the life of business! All our successes - at least the more important share - are from competition! I can see that there is new life - stronger determination in the men of the "George Henry" then before. By VIII OClock I could see our boats [[underlined]] flying [[/underlined]], sea-ward, before the strong wind in pursuit of a Whale. I think there would be glad hearts aboard the G.H. if a Whale should be our prize to-day!
Instead of condemning Capt. T. in unmeasured terms I doubt not all ^[[would]] join in, retracting what they have said & then giving thanks that the "Georgiana" has appeared in our waters!
Capt. B. is out with Myar's Crew, Myar aboard.
When hands came in at Noon reported having seen a Whale

This morning I made an interesting discovery! Some of the specimens I obtained at the time we went to "Frobisher Bay" (usually termed Frobisher Strait) prove to be a species of Coal. I threw ^[[one]] of said specimens on to a coal fire - in a few moments it burnt with a
