The return of the Sabbath! All hail! Sweet day of rest - to those who properly appreciate it. May this day find me far advanced in that knowledge which maketh a man wiser & better!
The morning opens with a shower of snow, beautiful emblem of God's Truth, pure as Heaven - all purity from above!
The men of the G.H. are in to-day. May they use this Holy day in studying God's Word & contemplating their destinies, their conditions.
Wind from the N.E. - snow-storming all day!
IX o'Clock ^[[eve]] - All have retired save the "Watch" & myself. At VI O'Clock ^[[this eve]] wind E NE now N.W. Barometer at VI ^[[Eve [[strikethrough]] [[?]] ]] 29.275 now 29.500 having risen .225 since the Hours named. A few stars are out but the heavens generally curtained with clouds. Behind them, however, at the E. around to the South & W. the Aurora is playing.
Capt. B. related to me this eve this incident which was told him by the son of the subject of the same: While Daboll, the author of the well known work entitled Daboll's Practical Navigator, published in 1820 at New London, CT, was living he invented a new & [[underline]] simple [[/underline]] mode of determining longitu[[strikethrough]]t[[/strikethrough]]ed. The invention was made while he (Daboll) was engaged hoeing corn. Stopping in the midst of his work, to work out his discovery by figuring with his finger, in Sand! The elation of his heart was comparable to the feeling of the ancient philos[[strikethrough]] t [[/strikethrough]]opher who ran out of his bath on discovering ^[[the celebrated]] [[strikethrough]] math [[/strikethrough]] geometrical problem ^[[-XLVIII Prob Euclid-]] [[strikethrough]] & [the solution [[/strikethrough]] "Eureka! Eureka!" yet, unlike [[strikethrough]] this [[/strikethrough]] ^[[that old]] philosopher, Daboll thought it his duty [[underline]] to finish what he had began [/underline]]- finish hoeing out his row! [[strikethrough]] of Corn! [[/strikethrough]] A fatal mistake for Daboll- & perhaps for the World! The invention was lost! Daboll could never recover ^[[it]] to the day of his death!

X O'Clck I have just returned from deck. almost a cloudless sky. The Heavens are my delight! They ravish me! The starry host makes me exclaim:
         "Awake my soul,
And meditate the wonder! Countless suns
Blaze round thee, leading forth their courtly worlds!
Worlds, in whose bosoms living things rejoice
And drink the bliss of being from the fount
Of all- prevailing LOVE!"

The Aurora is ^[[now]] arching the sky, extending from the E. across to the W.
[[wiggly line down from" make" in the previous paragraph to "across." Also image of vertical lines showing the Aurora, forming an arch and stars and the letters E. and S]]
The center of the Arch is 20[[degree symbol]] high, the East & West extremities, resting on the horizon. The ^[[open]] space above E.S.W. (East, South, West.) in above sketch of the Auroral Arch is a clear, dark blue sky. E. S W is the Horizon & also 3 of the Cardinal points. Holding this [[strikethrough]] leah [[/srikethrough]] leaf up perpendicular ^[[- before you, yourself]] facing the South, [[strikethrough]] with [[/strikethrough]] the simple sketch will convey the position of the Arch.
