[[margin]] 1860 Saturday Nov 10th [[/margin]]

Caused Ku-jes-se to leave his water just where ^[[it]] was & place himself on the dexter side. Thus the three walked with almost military precision to the upper tupik. The Ang-e-ko signified to Kujesse to enter 1st & then bid me to follow [[underlined]] his [[/underlined]] (K's) on my hands & Knees, I made ingress as every white man & Esquimaux must do to enter Esquimaux lodges. Ku-jes-se was bid to place himself on one side of the bed of the tupik & I was motioned to take my position by K's side. At Ku-jes-se's right sat a pretty Esquimaux ^[[one of]] the nulianas of the Ang-e-ko. The other nuliana was not at Home gone out to call upon some friends I suppose. Now commenced the solemn (?) exercises of moment. Angeko sat on a Sea-chest (which he happens to be blessed with ^[[by]] his peculiar [[strikethrough]] tactt [[/strikethrough]] tact of [[underlined]] blessing [[/underlined]](?) some one of his people) facing Ku-jesse & myself. Let it be here said, that Ku-jes-se, tho' a noble hearted Esquimaux, like all the rest of his people, is a devotee to the Esquimaux worship. Angeko commenced by a rapid clapping of his hands - so rapid indeed, that a fast speaker [[strikethrough]] could not [[/strikethrough]] would not be equal to the task of counting his strokes - Accompanying this were metaphorical expressions beyond the power of ordinary intelligences to divine. Of course none but an Ang-e-ko could understand what he did say. The very word [[underlined]] Angekan [[/underlined]] signifies, [[underlined]] "he is very great" [[/underlined]] - therefore, by ^[[an]] Ang-e-ko's view of the matter, none but the ^[[truly]] [[underlined]] Great should understand [[/underlined]] I, being out of this category, ^[[rested]] content to think all was according to Law & Gospel - ^[[Rev (?) Mr]] Angeko!
It was as much as I could do to keep on a long face but feeling a respect for all people's manner & customs, however erroneous I may think them, I felt determined to hold out. Every now & then Ang-e-ko would cease, when all was still as death - with renewed vigor he proceeded with his services putting his hands which were moved around during the operation now ^[[in]] a circle, now before my very face, now before Kujesse's. Another minute would he consumed in putting the chest on which he sat, 1st ^[[on]] one end, then on the other - then one side - then the opposite - then on the top & so on, [[underlined]] respecting [[/underlined]] all operations. Every few moments, [[strikethrough]] with all standing out of it [[/strikethrough]] with ^[[his]] Eyes staring down in the furthest recesses of the tent, as if [[underlined]] hell [[/underlined]] itself were there, he would become fixed as marble - looking almost hideous. Ku-jesse was often in requisition. Now his ^[[(K's)]] earnest eye was directed to be [[strikethrough]] held [[/strikethrough]] fixed at this point & that - but more [[strikethrough]] generally [[/strikethrough]] especially to that part of the tupik where Cudlargo's spirit shook it. Often also was Ku-jes-se catechized - Poor Ku-jes-se have I sympathised with him. There he sat, big drops of sweat pouring down from the roof of his nose - (the Esquimaux never sweat profusely but [[underlined]] on [[/underlined]] [[strikethrough]] the side his [[/strikethrough]] nose) & as earnest as though life & soul were the issue! All at once came unusual efforts - "the mountains labored - a little mouse was born." This ^[[grand [[underlined]] finalle [[/underlined]]]] effort was made with[[strikethrough]] just [[/strikethrough]] a sprinkling of Esquimaux - just enough for Ku-jes-se & myself to understand ^[[the nature of it]]. The spirit wanted to know if I wouldn't let Angeko have one of my double-barrel guns? Had a shot from ^[[a]] ten pounder come whizzing into the place where I was, I could not have been more astounded then ^[[at]] this proposition - offered as it was under [[underlined]] such surroundings! [[/underlined]] Well, I held my own. I asked friend Kujesse if Angeko ^[[really]] wanted one of my guns. He answered, affirmatively. Said I, would he be a good one to go with us to "Wessapoke", (distant lands) next summer. The same answer as before was given. Said I: 'Ku-jes-se [[underlined]] If the Angeko goes with us, he shall have a gun - one of my best. [[/underlined]]. This set Angeko all afire - his joy
