to my own - opposite. Tunukdelien & her lady friend are on a couch ^[[I]] made of sails and gibs belonging to ^[[the]] Whale Boats. These
were generously contributed for the night's use by ^[[mates]] Gardiner, Lamb & Smith. For covering Tunukdelien has my cloak - 'opera cloak' (a pretty thing an Arctic man would say for this region) while ^[[over]] her friend I placed my oil cloth coat - Over these I threw a calico Comfort. They are soundly sleeping
Mid-way between the Captain's open door ^[[to his birth]] & ^[[ [to]] that of mine. The ^[[secret history I]] [[strikethrough]] storm ^[[ [[?]] ]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] ^[[repeated]] to Capt. B. of La-Fayette when he visited America - how overwhelming the hospitality & greetings of the City of Boston - how the noble La Fayette when he ^[[had]] visited, was importuned & importuned to express if something ^[[more]] [[strikethrough]]?[[/strikethrough]] could not be done for him to contribute to his comfort - the  proposition relative to a "lady of one of the First families of Boston" -  the acceptance - the consumation - the fact! The Captain's decided unmistakable opinion of that lady (?) of one of the 1st of families of the town of Boston!
The Aurora commenced its fantastic dances at 5 o 'clock this eve. It now stretches ^[[its arch]] across the heavens from [[strikethrough]] N [[/strikethrough]] S.E. to N.W. - the whole southerly of the vessel. - Something [[strikethrough]] this [[/strikethrough]] thus

Though not at first. So, yet now their base is of prismatic colors.  I [[strikethrough]] know [[/strikethrough]] ^[[Know]] of no phenomenon more deeply interesting than that which is to [[strikethrough]] be [[/strikethrough]] be seen here every fair night, to wit, the Aurora.

This is a very fine night. The sky [[strikethrough]] clean [[/strikethrough]] clean & studded. I say a clear sky. So it is sure the
the path of light extending as described, 
The deck-walk ^[[& talk]] with Captain B. His
nobleness mounting up ^[[in my estimation]] like this splendid Aurora beams before us. Capt. B.'s interest in behalf of my voyage to King William's ^[[Land]] [[?]].
The friend's to my [[?mission]] here North will remember him - Aye, the friends [[strikethrough]] to [[/strikethrough]] of [[underlined]] Humanity, [[/underlined]] Geography & Science, will yet acknowledge that he is every much a Man - a lover of his country - of his race. Capt. B's [[underlined]] Protection [[/underlined]] to the interests of this expedition. I shall ever look to him as a warm, generous, noble friend.

Thermometer down to 3[[degree symbol]] this morning
VI o'clock. The ^[[ice]] was firmly locked together during the night. New ice fit for skating formed in the harbor a little distant North & N.W. of us. By to-morrow it will he so firm that all places of danger on the new ice will be removed. This morn I took a look at [[symbol for planet Jupiter]]s
sattelites. Saw all 4 in a row. Of course my
telescope enabled me to see them. However 
Captain Budington has such ^[[extraordinary]] sharp eyes that he saw the same without the aid of instruments on my testing him. [[strikethrough]] This d[[?] [[/strikethrough]]
