25th Night in an Igloo!
Sunday, Feb. 3d 1861.

At VIII O'clock this morning, Ebierbing returned - unsuccessful. He remained over his seal-hole from yesterday Noon till this Morning. It is not probable he will try that hole again. Too many days & nights have been spent over it by 2 1st rate Sealers to lose more precious time. Ebierbing says it is a bad hole, having indications that it is too old.

Jack ([[space]]) returned about 3 this Morn. He harpooned his seal but unfortunately it got away - disengaged from the harpoon. This is his 2d like misfortune within a short time - owing to constipation have been under the weather the last 2 days. The change of food, partaking largely & mostly of the Seal meat seems to be the cause of it. Happily I have with me some capital "Vegatable Pills" put up for me by my pysician when leaving Cincinnati, which are relieving me of said complaint. A fact that I note of these Pills - Whenever I have had occasion to use them while living on Civilization food, they have the desired effect within a few hours. While on the other hand, living on [[underlined]] Whale & Seal, [[/underlined]] they do not effect me under 24 to 48 hours!

To-day, we dined on a real Yankee dish - "Baked Beans" with accompanying pork! Preceeding this dish, however, we had cooked seal & Seal-Blood-Soup ending with the extraordinary voluptuous food indicated! The Baked Beans & Pork were sent, as before mentioned, by Capt B. Whenever we have this dish, I get out the [[underlined]] Block [[/underlined]] of Baked Beans & Pork & chop such a length of it off as I think sufficient to go around. With such weather as we have had since the provisions were sent me by Capt Budington

Baked Beans & Pork Block might be preserved a thousand years!
Dinner through, I asked Tuk-oo-li-too if she would please make a Bean soup out of some of the remaining "Block" for Nik-u-jar (Polly) the sick wife (No1) of Ugarny. She complied & soon I delivered in person a bowl of smoking hot Bean soup to as thankful a soul as Earth Knows - notwithstanding that soul is beneath the dome of a Snow-house.

Ebierbing started out this P.M. for sealing again. He had his mark of civilization paint on crystal ice close by a seal hole he had seen. He returned just before dark having found it entirely closed thus showing Seal had abandoned that place. Jack remained in to-day. I made calls to-day in each Igloo being now 3 beside our own. Polly treated me to what she knows I like - the fat hot, black scraps hanging on the Is-ce-che-une (the bar suspended close by the Ik-Ku-mer (Fire light) on wh. the seal blubber (Oo-sook) is hung to be tried [[?]] out). These scraps are what remains of the seal blubber after the oil is out. I like them much, tho but few Innuits indulge in therein. [[underlined]] They are dog-food! [[/underlined]] I care not for this; I acquired a fine taste for these "scraps" during the late close quarters into which we were pressed for food & that taste still keeps up. I trust it will continue so to do. They are good my tounge stomach says so!

This moment, little [[?Koo-Kier-yen]] comes in announcing that some body is coming. She can see something away out over the Se-ko (sea ice). Ebierbing at once starts out & i snow in after my Marian glass at the same time saying he thinks what he himself saw are Tuk-too - Rein-deer.
I have just been out. Three noble rein-deer are about 2 miles out, lazily walking hither & thither. What capital eating if only here! Before such a feast we must kill! There's the rub! All the town is out looking at Tuk-too
