toward the gang - way steps then back again. This he done several times - but as Capt. adds I gave no attention to this though now I am surprised & sorry I did not. To several others "Barkekark" done the same

"Keeney" one of the hands aft came down into the cabin & declared that the blood upon the dog (B.) was fresh Tuk-too Blood - & that the dog acted strangely.

Though I heard all this, & other conversation on this subject, I kept on writing without going up to see my almost talking dog. This I now regret. It was too [[strikethrough]] bad [[/strikethrough]] bad! I truly feel sorry. It is probable Barbekark could have made me understand what he wanted - He could find me no where!
"Spikes" left the vessel after the dog had tried his best for over an hour, to go to the wreck of the "Rescue" 100 rods S.W. The dog frisked about him as if delighted something it had never done before with "Spikes". Finding that "Spikes" was engaged at work about the wreck without any evident notion of accompanying it to the place where the trophy was Barbekark started off N.W. - Spikes watched him for some time & came to conclusion that the dog was really directing its course to the spot where [[strikethrough]] it [[/strikethrough]] he began to think it might have killed the deer. "Spikes" was one of the forward ones [[strikethrough]] for [[/strikethrough]] of the "Company of 9" to seek out what [[strikethrough]] that [[/strikethrough]] the dog (B.) had wanted - to find where he had gone!

I now give the names of parties making up this "Company of Nine" - also the portions of the deer each had.

[[note]][[underlined]] Vide, [[/underlined]] remarks of Mar 9th /61 [[/note]]

A Novel sight were these parties coming in! They skinned the Tuk-too & cut it up with jack knives within their mittened hands! They regretted they had not the harnesses so that they could have [[strikethrough]] drawn in [[/strikethrough]] had the dogs [[strikethrough]] draw [[/strikethrough]] drag the "conquered" to the ship. They say "Barbekark" should have the most distinguished position - that of Leader. This holds true with a Dog-team, but not so in bringing (towing) in a Whale - the 'distinguished position being [[underlined]] reversed [[/underlined]] - that of the Boat's crew who 1st "makes fast" - attaching their Boat to the fluke of the Whale all the other Boats ahead; the one having done the least taking the lead!!

While the "party of Nine" was up North or N.W. a shooting match on board the G. Henry in wh. my Rifle showed its quality
Capt. B. likes glass Bottles for [[strikethrough]] targe [[/strikethrough]] his targets (?) & that of his competitors. He hunted all around for a proper one - could find none empty -
