You have it, alas, it is too true! [[/underlined]] was my announcement.

Now the terrible News flew from this to to that one - from forecastle to steerage - all exclaiming: How sad - how terrible an end!

Having partaken of refreshments - & - exchanged my native skin dress (wh. was wringing wet with my profuse perspiration of the day) for my civilization clothes, which I wore only when about the ship, I had to relate all the incidents connected with my search, to the company around.

I was sorry to find every one who had been out engaging actively in the search, completely used up. The three from whom I parted [[strikethrough]] at [[/strikethrough]] a little after 2 PM did not get to the vessel till near VI.

As I must be a truthful recorder of fact, without a particle of egotistical feeling to mar my soul, I must say encomiums have been [[strikethrough]] more [[/strikethrough]] passed to me entirely beyond what I merit, for the persistence - for my devotedness to the cause of human life - for my unexpected endurance to the end!

Capt. Budington, whose good opinion I value, says that he had no idea I was the man to accomplish what I have this day - to completely out-do the combined force that had been sent out in the search.

But what of encomiums? It is well to be [[underlined]] well [[/underlined]] thought of. [[underlined]] I could not praise [[/underlined]] & I pray God to give me a heart

The distance I have travelled to-day is full 50 miles, an accomplishment of which I myself was surprised at.

- | Miles
Number of miles from vessel to the point where we struck the tracks | 6
Distance direct from 1st striking tracks to the extreme point reached Sea-ward | 16
Distance additional from the indirect courses between said points | 25
Distance from said extreme (toward Davis Straits) to place
where the dead was found - by circuitous (tracks) route | 12
Distance from grave (place of Death) to vessel direct | 12
(Total English miles 51) | 51 Miles

The distance Brown travelled from the hour (12 o'clock Saturday Noon), wh. he left Frobisher Bay, to the time of his death probably VII or VIII o'clock Sunday (this) Morning was as follows
Deduct distance from vessel to place where he struck the Sea ice (N.N.W. if vessel) 51 - 6 = 45
Distance Frobisher Bay Settlement to "Rescue Bay" - 9
[[Total]] 54
