young of the Seal. He came near getting the mother too, but giving the hook the slip she escaped
Charley brought this to show me soon as he returned 1/2 past VI eve. He placed it on my little Cabin floor giving it the natural position to it. I asked him how old it was - he looked beneath the nails of the fore flipper & answered: 'Born yesterday'. The young Seal's covering white as wool. In fact I know of nothing with which to compare it to so favorably as our Lamb's Wool.
The stockings of the Summer & Fall are made of its fur or Wool. Kodling's & jackets are [[strikethrough]] sometimes [[/strikethrough]] made of it.

Its weight 16 lbs. - Its meat said to be very tender & fine.

If one likes Seal, the same will say the young [[strikethrough]] to be [[/strikethrough]] superior. [[strikethrough]] to it [[/strikethrough]]

One week ago & one of the men of the "George Henry" found his untimely end! How terrible was that Death! How fair the prospect to him (John Brown) of returning to his ship's companions & joining with them in their then unbroken circle!

That [[underlined]] "Search" [[/underlined]] in which I so correctly entered was one that will long live in memory. How terrible was that death! That scene of finding the lost - the dead! In my hours of sleep the incidents of last [[symbol: cross]] burst in upon me.

To day, at Meridian, I took the Altitude of the Sun by Artificial Horizon using the Astronomical telescope attached to my Large Sextant. There is probably an index error that makes the latitude of this place as determined [[stirkethrough]] last [[/strikethrough]] to-day 2 miles less than as determined last fall. For the 1st time I used the telescope. I will record the observation & results - finding to-morrow, if possible, the index error.
