to the tradition of ships entering this Bay long time ago. The tobacco pipe smoking group of little Innuits! Little girls & boys smoking nearly all the time. O, Civilization! What hast thou done for this people?

My visit to Koo-Kin's Igloo - His return from Sealing while in there & bringing in a Seal. Knowing a Seal Feast was to follow by course & that a crowd of Innuits would require all the space of the Igloo I started to leave. Koo-Kin & Kun-ni-a (not U-garny's Kun-ni-a) objected. I cheerfully consented to remain. I soon found this was to be a Feast for the [[underlined]] Old folks - mostly [[/underlined]] venerable old ladies!

I sat back of the hostess, Kun-ni-a. Along beside me were 3 of the aforesaid [[underlined]] "Venerables". [[/underlined]] Their names are
Shel-ar-ping
Ku-Ku-ar-chuk
Che-ud-ling

The former presided on the other side of the Igloo from Kun-ni-a before her Ik-u-mer (Lamp) assisting in assorting & handing out to the company the seal as it was cut up. She occupies jointly this Igloo with her sons & daughters. Kou-Kin, her eldest - the next Ur-me-ar-chu-ung. The prospective wife of the latter lives here & was present. Her name Ik-Ker-e-ung. Another lady - a married woman - was by me - name An-nu-tik-er-tung. The old women whose names I have given above, were jolly souls - very attentive to me - seemingly delighted to see me participate [[underlined]] as an Innuit [[/underlined]] in this Feast. I must say if my friends in the States had seen me - seen [[underlined]] how like an Innuit I ate, they would have blushed for me, [[/underlined]] if I did not! First a portion of Seal's liver, raw & warm from its late life, with a slice of Ook-sook (Seal's blubber) was handed each. I made way for mine as quick as any of the [[underlined]] old [[/underlined]] adepts. Then came ribs enclosed in tender meat dripping with blood. How Ambrosial to my palate! Lastly came - What? - [[underlined]] Entrails [[/underlined]] which the old lady, Chel-lar-ping drew through her [[underlined]] strapping fingers [[/underlined]]

yards of it - rods of it - I know not but the length was even a furlong! This was passed to each (except myself) in lengths from 2 to 3 feet. I saw that the lady Chel-lar-ping & her aged companions felt as though it would be an insult to offer me of this finishing off course! It was no new dish for me - I had indulged - [[underlined]] luxuriated [[/underlined]] in the same before tho' had [[underlined]] qualms [[/underlined]] at first! I signified my wish to participate for be it understood there [[underlined]] is nothing of the Seal but is good! [[/underlined]] I drew the ribbon looking artical through my teeth Innuit fashion - finished it & like Oliver Twist cried for more. The old ladies were in ecstacy! It seemed as if they thought me the best one of the group - they laughed - they bestowed upon me all the pleasant epithets their language would admit. I was fully one of them - one of the honored few. Soon as this last round of Feasting was through with, one of the old lady Innuits drew my attention to her affliction. She had a dreadful pain in her side & back - had been badly afflicted for weeks. Before I had time for a second thought she drew her long tailed coat over her head & was there [[underlined]] naked before me! [[/underlined]] The laughing face - the joyful ringing voice of the old lady were now changed to sympathy creating agencies. The whole party present was absorbed with the subject before me. I put on as long a face (& as [[underlined]] dignified [[/underlined]]) as I was capable of [[underlined]] sustaining [[/underlined]] in this [[underlined]] trying (?) scene! [[/underlined]] Much was expected - & I felt determined disappointment should not follow. Therefore I proceeded to manipulate the parts effected - or rather [[underlined]] ploughed [[/underlined]] my fingers in the rich loam - real estate - that covered said places. The result was this announcement wh. seemed to satisfy all especially the patient before me: that she should live on eating as much fresh Seal & Walrus
