jority of the people. Place in their hands the executive, legislative and judicial powers of government. Place the armed forces and the police force in their hands as weapons of protection, rather than as instruments of their suppression, for which they are used today. Extend the right of self-government to the Negroes in the territory where they constitute the majority of the population. In short, give them the right to determine their own destiny, their form of government; and their right to decide what their relationship should be to the rest of the country - that is, the right of self-determination.

That's what they're scared of. Old Lord Rothermere let the cat out of the bag way back in 1933. He's surely no Red. He wrote then in the Daily Mail, his London paper:

"The sturdy young Nazis of German are Europe's guardians against the communist danger....German must have elbow room....Once Germany has acquired the additional territory she needs in Western Russia, the problem of the Polish Corridor could be settled without difficulty....The diversion of Germany's reserves of energies and organizing ability into Bolshevik Russia would help restore the Russian people to a civilized existence, and perhaps turn the tide of world trade once more towards prosperity. By the same process Germany's need for expansion would be satisfied, and the growing menace which at present darkens the horizon would be removed forever."

Maybe you think I'm stretching a point, or that this information is a bit out of date. In that case, look at this recent statement of the Dean of Canterbury, a leader of the Church of England. In defense of the Soviet Union against the current flood of lies, he says:

"Russia feared with reason a united Western attack. We {Britain-J.H.W.} through many years desired Germany to be the spearhead of that attack. Many influential persons still desire and work for it. Russia knows that."

There's another reason why they hate the Soviet Union. Dorothy Thompson, "ace" columnist of the reactionary New York Herald Tribune, gives the game away. In her column of October 13 in this organ of high finance, she says:

"Every military consideration favored acceptance of the Russian terms by the Allies. But more than military considerations are at stake. For the object of this war is not to destroy Germany - which, with the aid of Russia, might not have been difficult - but to save Germany for Western civilization against her own leadership."

To save Western civilization! So that's the aim of the war!
But even more revealing is the contribution of the Hitler medalist, Lone-Eagle Colonel Charles E. Lindberg. Writing in the November, 1939, issue of the Readers Digest, his thesis is that all the nations of the "white race" ought to stop fighting each other and get together against "Asia," by which he means the Soviet Union, and thus, "guard ourselves against attack by foreign armies and dilution by foreign races."

And Mr. Williams Randolph Hearst, notorious for his anti-Negro policies, warns of the danger of "Asiatic Communism." And Mr. Walter Lippmann, outstanding theoretician of the American ruling class, joins in with the plea that we prepare ourselves against "the advance of another Genghis Khan."

This is the new variation of the Lothrop Stoddard theme of the "rising tide of color," dressed up to fit the new situation, the camouflage and justify the real aim of the imperialist plunderers in this war.

Let our people take notice. Here we have from our worst enemies an admission of the true role of the Soviet Union. This revival of racism demonstrates clearly that the ruling classes recognize the land of socialism as the champion of the liberation movements of colonial and oppressed peoples. The capitalist classes recognize this - even though many of the middle-class "leaders" of the Negro people do not.

And then who stopped fascism in Poland? Surely not Britain and France. It was the Red Army of that same Soviet Union which drew a line beyond which the Nazis dared not march. It was the Red Army that brought peace and bread to the thirteen million Ukrainian and White Russian people who had been deserted to their fate by their cowardly govern-
