Men of the G.H. been engaged to-day cleaning Whale-bone - taking the slabs apart & cutting off the gum which is white as milk.  Average weight of the medium & longest slabs 7 lbs.  Whale-bone is precious stuff - worth not exactly its weight in silver but [[underlined]] considerable [[/underlined]] towards it.
After dinner, sledges started back not to return.  The orders of Capt. B. to Mate Rogers who has now been over three months camping out on the Bay below this not to return till he can come with Boats.  On Capt. B's going out to one of the Islands at the time the dog drivers started it was thout doubtful about their getting down to Whale depot (Budington Ville) as the ice has been broken up by late gale & has set off up to "French Head".  The prospect now is that we shall have open water in few days, tho' it would not be strange (if pleasant without much wind should follow) if we did not get free for a month.  It is well that the Boat's crew of Rogers is to remain there where they are for a while as Whales are now making their appearance there.  Rogers + his crew
