1861 Oct 4 Fri.

Morning for Oo-Kood-leer (Budington Inlet). They pull along down the N.E. side of the Bay among the numerous Islands purposing to stop to-night at Wing-eye-yer, a place near the Cape at the entrance of Rescue Bay. "Blind George" (Par-loo-yer) a noble Innuit, was one of the crew at the oars. He handles his oar with as complete dexterity under all circumstances (smooth & rough waters) as any one having sight.
Four boats (the "G.H.'s" crews) started out this Morning to cruise for Whales. The wind strong from S.W. At 11 O'Clk AM Capt. B. came down & asked me if I wanted to see Boats making [[underlined]] "white-water"! [[/underlined]] I said, Yes, & followed him quickly up on deck. Spy in hand looking in direction of Rescue Harbor I could see the Boats under sail beating up toward the ship. quite over the tops of the sails.
The sight was one of intrest showing how complete have the hands of man modeled a craft [[underlined]] *bright, [[/underlined]] beautiful & buoyant, that dances so "like a *thing of life" upon the raging, roaring Sea.
Some of the 4 made much Lee-way, - yet, 1/2 an hour brought them to the same point - to the vessel. Mate Rodgers came in, a few moments [[underlined]] ahead, [[/underlined]] Lamb next. One of the Boats had shipped water up to the [[?th]] It would make some people wonder to witness such battling with the elements, why the boats were not swallowed up - & all those within! Good seamen with good craft will do wonderful things! A fine Sea-scene these 4 Boats to-day. The whalers report seeing one Whale, lazily ploughing & plunging around in the Bay, down by "Look-Out" - but they could not get near him.
[[underlined]] At one O'Clk P.M. wind whipped around to N.W. still strong. [[/underlined]]
These 4 Boats [[underlined]] shine [[/underlined]] in their new dress of White & Green paint!
