complaints.  But all my bodily sufferings had nothing to do with my reasons for turning back.  A calm, reasoning view of all the paramount circumstances relative to proceeding on to Oo-pung-ne-wing - taking into account the bad weather - the exposed Coast from Og-bier-seer-u-ping (the western termination of Lupton Strait) to Oo-pung-ne-wing, the increasing cold weather making it probable that in many places ice would make before I could return so that it would be impossible to get back with the Boat - & the time (2 days) consumed in making 1/2 day's journey [[underlined]] made me decide yesterday Morning to turn back. [[/underlined]]
Much as I desired to make that trip to the interesting place of my late visit, yet, I consider my return one of prudence & safety.  If man could see into the future - could tell what dangers he might encounter, or [[underlined]] avoid, [[/underlined]] he would then be better prepared for acting a higher, nobler part - but as it is, we are [[underlined]] mortals [[/underlined]] -

feeling our way along blindly through this World of [[underlined]] pre-existence. [[/underlined]]  This Morning the "Try-Work-stocked - boiling blubber.  Now IX P.M. & 15 casks of 5 Barrels each of excellent White oil tried out!  Rapid work this.
The Aurora in its full beauty & glory to-night.
I have been for some time considering an important matter - & bringing the same before my friend Capt. B.  It is relative to taking home to the States the Innuit Koo-jes-se who was my Boat-Steerer on my voyage to the head of what I now denominate [[underlined]] "Frobisher Gulff".[[/underlined]]  Capt. B. thinks well of my plan, & proposes to me to do all in his power to make the expense of my doing this as light on me as possible.  He goes further.  He said to me to-night while having a sociable chat in our little Aft Cabin:  'You (myself) will need some of [[underlined]] "the needful" [[/underlined]] on arriving at new London - & you (me) shall have it'.
